Odour detected in cabin on flight test aircraft. Indicative of oil leakage into gas path from Internal Gear Box (IGB) which was observed on development engine strip downs. More evident with multiple cranking cycles.
Responsibilities:
I was the Designer assigned to this task.
I had to work out why it was happening, propose solution options and finally come up with new design for engine components.
Liaise and seek approval with specialists and present progress through Design Reviews to the Chief Engineers.
Achievements:
Successfully determined cause of oil leakage by means of reasoning and analysis.
Improved design of 3 significant engine components which stops leakage and significantly improves required stiffness at a minimal weight increase.
